The story of Aaron Pico can potentially become more and more commonplace if college athletes continue to play unpaid. Pico was one of the top high school wrestling recruits so much so that Nike offered the 17-year-old a huge sponsorship deal. Pico went onto become a professional MMA fighter and now is one of the youngest professional athletes. Because young talented athletes know that they won’t be paid from age 18 to 22 if they go to college they are exploiting other options and those options involve not going to college. The money and fame that Pico is generating becomes appealing to the next top recruit who wants to make money more than he or she wants to get an education.
