Southern Methodist University

Southern Methodist University was involved in one of the largest NCAA scandals during the 1970s and 80s when the school was continuously caught for paying their recruits and football players.  The massive scandal ultimately resulted in the “Death Penalty” which cancelled SMU’s entire 1987 football season.  ESPN’s 30 for 30 series covered the incident in their film Pony Excess which highlighted some of SMU’s star players: Eric Dickerson, Craig James, etc.  Scandals like this can be avoided if payment was allowed in the NCAA.
